Breast Reduction Surgery
A breast reduction or mammoplasty procedure resolves the problems associated with overly large breasts. Many women have breasts that are naturally oversized due to overdevelopment of their breast tissue.
Women who elect to undergo the surgery usually do so as they are aware of their skin being stretched by the weight of their breasts and the loss of their feminine curve, or they may suffer from discomfort to the neck, back and or shoulders due to the weight of their breasts.
The condition of oversized breasts can, in some cases lead to curvature of the spine. As well as restricting movement and limiting the kinds of sport that can be enjoyed. Also the condition can require specialised clothing in order to support the breast which again can be quite restrictive and limiting.
Breast Surgery Consultation
A breast reduction procedure should not be undertaken before you are fully aware of all of the facts surrounding the procedure. All clinics should offer you a consultation as a matter of course.
The consultation itself should be with a medical professional, either a surgeon or a nurse. They will explain the nature of the procedure to you and exactly what it will involve. It is important that you make an informed decision and that you allow yourself enough time after the consultation to make a considered choice. Ensure that all surgeons are registered with the General Medical Council.
The Procedure
During the operation the surgeon will reduce the volume of both breasts, by removing excess breast tissue; they will then restore the contour of the breasts in line with the patients original skeletal outline. The nipples will usually be repositioned so that they match perfectly with the new shape of the breasts.
The operation usually takes between two and three hours, while the patient is under a general anaesthetic. The incisions will either be made under the fold of the breast or in the pigmented nipple area, in both cases this will minimise the visibility of any of the scarring caused by the operation.
The sensitivity of the nipples may be partially lost as a result of the operation, in some cases totally, but this will depend on the type of treatment. The patients ability to breast feed will be affected by this procedure. And in some cases there maybe a slight amount of asymmetry between breasts.
Post-Procedure Recovery
After the procedure is complete there maybe a degree of discomfort which should be countered with pain relief under the supervision of the medical staff in charge of post operative care. Supportive clothing should be worn and strenuous physical activities should be avoided for a minimum of six weeks. The stitches will usually be removed after two weeks.
The reduction in the patients breast size will be obvious immediately after the operation, but the settled contours of the breasts may take a period of six months until they become apparent. It may take up to a year for the scarring to fade.
